In the second of our Through the Keyhole series, we meet vendor Sean to find out more about what first attracted him to Wandsworth, why he decided to build his property in Pentland Street, and why the features he chose are special.
What first attracted you to the house?
We were lucky enough to acquire some land right in the centre of an area we loved, which allowed us to design and build a brand new, unique detached home. We arranged it so the house is east facing and incorporated full length windows so the morning sunlight floods all the living spaces.
Why did you choose this area?
We had previously lived in a riverside apartment in Battersea but chose to move to Wandsworth because it felt so friendly and safe. When we met our new neighbours, they were very welcoming and immediately made us feel at home.
The street we live on is very peaceful, but the area as a whole is full of life. The open spaces of Wandsworth Common and King George’s Park are right on the doorstep, so we can enjoy a run before work or join in the touch rugby that is played in the evening. There are also numerous bars and restaurants close by to enjoy a cold beer after exercise.
If we’re looking for something less active, the Cineworld cinema is right around the corner in Southfields Shopping Centre. As well as all the shops, cosy cafes and local library. In addition, the transport links are great – as well as Earlsfield and Wandsworth Town stations, there are numerous bus stops within a few minutes’ walk of the house.
How long have you lived here?
I have lived nearby since 2002 and very much wanted to stay in this area. The area has been improving since I moved in and I’ve really felt the benefit of the regeneration, it’s full of life and there is always something going on. There are also good schools nearby, so there is no need to move once you start a family.
Why did you decide to build your property?
We were very fortunate to have the rare opportunity to build our home from scratch, rather than renovate. Building our own property gave us the freedom to select the attributes most important to us. We wanted a unique house that felt spacious, bright and luxurious. We put a lot of thought into how to make the best use of the space available, and how to maximise each square foot. Getting planning permission was a long, arduous task, but the final result made it worth it.
What are the reasons behind your design ideas?
In the bedroom we chose bespoke fitted wardrobes that covered the full width of the room, this gave us enough space for our clothes and kept the rest of the room clutter free. Having a full bath in the bathroom was my girlfriend’s idea and has made a big difference, it’s much more luxurious to relax in a bath before bed, instead of having a shower.
To keep the living room and kitchen bright and airy we chose white walls and ceilings. We designed the kitchen as an L shape, with handmade units along the full width of the room. We included a shoe and coat cupboard and deep drawers along the floor, which allowed plenty of storage, and helped provide us with a clean minimal look. We also lowered the counter top on one side of the room to allow space for my 55” TV.
I am a keen cook so wanted to make sure the kitchen was right. We didn`t want the microwave to disturb the clean lines of the kitchen and at first struggled to find the right solution. Eventually we managed to find a full sized combination oven and microwave which solved the issue. We also added Corian worktops to add to the luxurious feel.
What are your favourite features of the renovation?
Some of my favourite features aren’t ones that you would necessarily notice immediately. I love the underfloor heating, as it’s great to walk on on a chilly morning, and also saves the need for radiators.
Another of my favourite features are the wall sockets that incorporate USB chargers. I always seemed to have electronic gadgets that needed charging and didn’t have enough plugs to put them in. We put the chargers in every corner, so now never run out of plug space.
The secret storage pit beneath the floor is huge and gives us tons of room for all our things.
It’s also great to live in a detached house for obvious reasons!
Why are you moving?
Due to family reasons, but we hope someone else gets to enjoy making it their home.
