What to bear in mind before relocating from abroad

Finding a new home can be stressful, but add the pressures of relocating to a different country for a new job, and it’s likely to be even more challenging. It’s therefore important to prepare; it will determine how smooth your transition will be, and how quickly you will settle into a new city. A six to eight week preparation period prior to any move is recommended, as it will give you enough time to research and secure the rental property that meets your requirements.

London is a cosmopolitan city made up of a series of connected villages offering something different – from high density city living in Central London to the more suburban towns and villages in outer London – it’s therefore important to clearly identify what you want from your time here.


Understanding what your budget will get you before you start your search will give you a realistic idea of the size, location and type of property you can afford and make the search process much more efficient. Other factors such as wanting a large outside space, or needing a pet friendly property, will also need to be considered, as these tend to be more challenging requests, and can increase your costs.

Once you have analysed exactly what type of property you need, and considered extra expenses such as utility bills, TV licence fees and council tax, the next step is to narrow your search down to a maximum of three areas.


Exploring your three chosen areas in advance is a good way to help you decide which one will suit your lifestyle the best. If you are unable to do this before relocating, then speaking to people who currently reside in your desired areas, as well as reading local forums and blogs, should help you gain a better understanding. To help with your relocation, it’s important to check if any relocation service is offered by your employer. If it isn’t, then reaching out to a Corporate and Relocation Services department, which is a service that most well established estate agents offer, should help make the process more hassle free.

Rental market
