Little London voices on climate change

Are London’s younger residents clued up on all things green? Climate change is a hot issue for the new decade, and the 10:10 campaign, which aims to get people to reduce their carbon footprint by 10 per cent during 2010, has made this the year to take action. But what do little Londoners think of their future? A National Children’s Bureau report on children’s views on eco issues reveals that they really do say the funniest things. ‘I’m happy it is warmer in November, it saves money on heating,’ said one, while another was concerned that being more ecologically aware might affect their personal circumstances, saying, ‘There’s no way I would cut the hours I play on my Xbox!’

Run the London Underground

Meet the fitness fanatics going Runderground. Dynamic duo Sam Upton and Stuart Leslie have come up with an endearingly eccentric exercise plan. Their London Runderground project is an attempt to run the entire tube network overground. ‘It started out as a bit of fun for the two of us but it seems to have captured people’s imaginations,’ says Stuart. They welcome fellow fitizens on Facebook. You don’t need to run all of the lines, it’s just an excuse to enjoy yourself, get fit and explore the city. The only must is that you wear the colour of the line you’re running, and you’re encouraged to make a donation to charities that work towards improving health in the UK.

See who’s streets ahead in the style stakes for London Fashion Week. Listen for the stampede of Louboutins from 19 to 23 February as the fashion elite descends on London Fashion Week. Designer Paul Costelloe, who’s opened the show for the past five seasons, explains why London is a style leader. ‘We have a wonderful combination of designer and high-street style that produces a great, irreverent salute to fashion. Plus London’s devil-may-care attitude is infectious,’ he says. And is there anything he’d like to see the back of? ‘Absolutely – slouchy boots for women and skinny jeans for men!’

Shop from over 120 designers at Fashion Week venue Somerset House from 25 to 28 February. www.londonfashionweekend.co.uk

Horsing around in Hyde Park

One woman faces her fears and takes us along for the ride. Equestrian events may not have the high profile of their two-legged counterparts at the Olympics, but the Capital’s horse-riding enthusiasts are to receive a boost from the 2012 games. New riding schools being built in Greenwich and Brixton will each receive £200,000 of funding as part of the projects surrounding the 2012 London Olympics. With that in mind, Completely London challenged KFH press officer Jenny Hogan to conquer her longstanding terror of horses. ‘The night before the ride, I thought, “What the hell am I doing?” But in the morning at Hyde Park Stables the instructor, Vivien, was so encouraging that I immediately felt better – until she brought out a large Piebald, called Hannibal! Then he started nuzzling me and I realised he was a gentle giant. After a few wobbly moments I managed a brisk trot – it was the biggest rush. I’m not scared of horses any more!’

You don’t say! For nearly 100 years, until 2003, the Royal Mail shunted post across the Capital on its own miniature underground railway.
