Ben Goulding knows a thing or two about seeing beauty and potential where others may only see ugly decor and work: ‘I like to buy period properties and restore them to their original glory,’ he says. Ben’s latest labour of love is a two bedroom Bayswater apartment, just a hop, skip and jump away from Hyde Park. ‘The flat was in a pretty bad state,’ remembers Ben, ‘but its high ceilings appealed to me.’ Nowhere are those ceilings more lofty than in the living/dining room, where they reach four metres. Having restored the original cornices, Ben added cast iron Victorian radiators and finished the refurb with a neutral colour scheme. ‘The property is architect designed,’ says Ben – he enlisted the advice of an expert to help him create the fresh, modern home he thinks is ideal for ‘a younger audience’.

Comely kitchen

Kitchens don’t come much slicker than the one in Charlie McArdle’s four bedroom Victorian townhouse in Battersea. ‘It always looks pristine, like no one actually uses it,’ says the TV presenter, ‘but we cook here all the time. We just designed it to be really easy to keep clean.’ The design features metallic grey green cupboards that ‘almost touch the ceiling, to really make the most of the space’, luxurious Corian worktops, easy clean glass splashbacks and a wine fridge discreetly hidden in the room’s central island. ‘So it’s not only brilliant for cooking in, it’s great for entertaining, too,’ says Charlie.

A grand entrance

‘If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the hallway is the face; the first thing visitors see, it gives a taste of what’s inside.
